    by Jeremy Mann, Sauron was initially called Mairon, he was a Maia in the service of Aulë, as was Saruman. He was well versed in the art of magic and blacksmithing and had great ability in this field. Mairon followed Melkor in his quest to rule the earth and became his most terrible lieutenant.
